At Two Ackers Media, the Acker brothers bring this fascination to life through their astrophotography, turning the vast, star-filled sky into stunning works of art. Join us as we explore the magic of astrophotography and the ongoing adventure of capturing the cosmos.
The Allure of Astrophotography
Astrophotography is more than just taking pictures of the night sky; it’s about connecting with the universe in a profound way. For Brian, this genre of photography is an exploration of the beauty and mystery that lies beyond our planet. Each photograph is a testament to the endless wonders of the cosmos, from the grandeur of distant galaxies to the delicate shimmer of the Milky Way.
Astrophotography runs deep in the Acker family’s history. Both Aaron and Brian’s passion for capturing the night sky was inspired by their late father, Al Acker. An avid photographer with a deep love for astronomy, Al once owned a private observatory where the family would spend time capturing the cosmos. His enthusiasm for the stars and dedication to the art of photography deeply influenced his sons, planting the seeds for their own exploration of astrophotography. Through their work, they continue to honor his legacy and share the wonder of the night sky that their father so dearly cherished.
A New Journey Begins: Finding Dark Skies
To capture the night sky effectively, having the right equipment is just one part of the equation. Equally important is finding dark skies. While Grand Junction doesn’t have the worst light pollution in the country, a short drive of an hour or two away can lead to much darker skies—sometimes a quick trip into Utah does the trick. Preparation for a successful astrophotography adventure involves checking weather conditions, moon phases, and selecting optimal locations away from city lights.
On this particular trip, the goal wasn’t necessarily to capture the perfect shot but to find a decent location and enjoy the process. With both brothers using different camera and lens setups, exploring various compositions, and simply soaking in the night sky, success was found in the adventure itself. Although a few shots from the trip contributed to its success, the true reward lay in the experience.
Brian’s portfolio includes some truly remarkable images of the night sky. His favorite shots often feature breathtaking views of the Milky Way arching over the rugged landscapes of Western Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. Each photograph is a piece of a larger puzzle, a snapshot of a moment in time that showcases the beauty of our universe. The photos captured on this night add to the ongoing story of our photography adventures.
